Shut Down Bangkok Airport

Bangkok's international airport will remain closed until at least the end of Wednesday after anti-government protesters seized control of the facility, an air traffic control official said. Watch the Video.

Staff had been asked to leave the control tower at Suvarnabhumi Airport because of the closure, said Puttawan Noirod, a spokeswoman for Aeronautical Radio of Thailand which controls air traffic across the country.

"First Airports of Thailand told us that the airport would be closed until midday but then they informed us that the airport will not operate the rest of the day," Puttawan said.

Earlier on Wednesday, protesters tightened their hold on the airport, where two people were wounded in a blast and thousands of travellers left stranded by demonstrators vowing to topple the government.

Anti-government protesters in Thailand said that an explosive was hurled overnight at their sit-in outside the prime minister's office, killing one and wounding 23.

One of the protest leaders, Amorn Amornratamanon, said the blast occurred shortly after 3 a.m. Thursday. He says the explosive was thrown inside the main gate of the Government House compound, which protesters have occupied since August.

Government officials have not worked at the compound since the protest began.

Protesters are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat.
